BaneMaster: The Adventure is a late-1990s fantasy CCG with a quest-structured solo-plus-duel gameplay concept, positioned as a CCG that could also function as a co-op adventure game.

The game

Released in 1998 by Magestone Publishing, BaneMaster: The Adventure is a two-player duel where each player builds a Hero party and traverses a linked sequence of Quest cards representing dungeons, cities and wilderness. The BaneMaster mechanic lets one player take an overseer role setting up monsters and obstacles, with a cooperative variant enabling two players to face a third or a rules-driven automated BaneMaster.

The context

The late-90s CCG market was looking for format innovations to differentiate from the Magic-dominated standard, and co-op CCG concepts were one experimental direction. BaneMaster found a small audience but never crossed over into mainstream hobby stores.

The collector angle

Only a base set effectively shipped. The game is obscure today, appearing occasionally in estate-lot breakdowns of late-90s CCG stock. The hero-class signature cards from the base set are the primary items sought by completionist 1990s-CCG collectors.
