Battlelords of the 23rd Century is a sci-fi CCG adaptation of the SSDC-published tabletop RPG that has been running since 1990, a setting where mercenary companies hire out across a violent interstellar economy.
The game
Released in 2000 by Optimus Design Systems under SSDC license, Battlelords of the 23rd Century CCG is a two-player mercenary-squad duel where each player fields a Company drawn from the RPG's mercenary archetypes and fights across Contract missions. Mechanics use a Contract-payoff system where winning a contract grants credits that can be reinvested into new troops mid-game.
The context
SSDC had been publishing the Battlelords RPG for a decade when the CCG launched and had a loyal but niche audience. Optimus Design Systems took the CCG license with the same goal as most license-taker CCG publishers: convert existing RPG fans into a broader card-playing base. The 2000-era CCG market was crowded and saturated, which limited distribution.
The collector angle
Only the base set shipped; Optimus did not follow with expansions. Because the print was small and the RPG audience was specific, a meaningful percentage of the printed cards stayed within SSDC's direct-mail customer base rather than entering general distribution. SSDC still sells Battlelords RPG material, and occasional promotional CCG cards have been included with RPG book purchases over the years, which creates small-run collector items outside the standard 2000 catalog.
