Blue Dragon RPCG is the card-game tie-in to the Mistwalker/Artoon JRPG of the same name, a Microsoft-published Xbox 360 exclusive designed by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi with character designs by Akira Toriyama.
The game
Released in 2007-2008 by Bandai, Blue Dragon RPCG is a two-player duel where each player summons Shadow Beasts (the video game's shadow-based magical companions) using cards representing the main-character cast (Shu, Jiro, Kluke, Zola, Marumaro, Noi). Mechanics mirror the video game's shadow-manifestation combat system through a Shadow Swap mechanic.
The context
Blue Dragon was a high-profile Microsoft-published JRPG that launched at the Xbox 360's push into the Japanese market. The Toriyama character designs and Sakaguchi name recognition made it a notable release, and a manga, anime and TCG were all produced to extend the IP. The anime aired in Japan 2007-2009 with English Cartoon Network distribution.
The collector angle
Only a limited TCG print shipped during the short franchise peak. Foil Shadow Beast cards are the signature pulls, with Toriyama's distinctive creature designs being the primary draw. Because Blue Dragon did not receive sequels beyond a Nintendo DS spinoff, the franchise has remained a single-entry curiosity, and the TCG shares that one-shot collectibility.
