Call of Cthulhu CCG is Fantasy Flight Games' 2004 H.P. Lovecraft CCG, officially licensed from Chaosium and built on the Call of Cthulhu RPG setting. It ran as a CCG from 2004 through 2008 before Fantasy Flight converted it to an LCG, one of the earliest titles in FFG's Living Card Game format.

The game

Designers Eric Lang and Nate French built the game around Lovecraftian horror investigators confronting cultists, creatures, and Great Old Ones. Each player commanded a Faction (Miskatonic University, Agency, Silver Twilight, Cthulhu, Hastur, Shub-Niggurath, Yog-Sothoth) with distinct playstyles. The Sanity mechanic directly echoed the Call of Cthulhu RPG's iconic mental-deterioration rules.

The context

2004 was FFG's growth period, pre-LCG-format invention. The company was expanding from board games into CCGs, and Call of Cthulhu was their first major CCG license. The game attracted the Lovecraft fiction community, Call of Cthulhu RPG players, and horror-themed CCG collectors.

The LCG transition

In 2008 FFG converted the CCG into LCG format, shipping fixed pre-defined monthly expansions rather than random boosters. The Call of Cthulhu LCG ran from 2008 through 2015 before FFG transitioned Lovecraftian content to Arkham Horror: The Card Game (2016), a different game with a different design.

The collector angle

The 2004 to 2008 CCG era is the retro collector window. Arkham Edition (2004) and the Masks of Nyarlathotep expansion are the early collector targets, and specific rare Great Old One cards carry collector premiums. For Lovecraft merchandise completists, Call of Cthulhu CCG bridges Chaosium's 1996 Mythos CCG and the modern Arkham Horror LCG era as the middle chapter of Lovecraftian card gaming history.
