Cardcaptors TCG is the English-market adaptation of Cardcaptor Sakura, CLAMP's 1996-2000 manga and anime that helped define the late-90s magical-girl genre in Japan and the early-2000s magical-girl wave in the West.
The game
Released in 2001 by NetStorm Media, Cardcaptors TCG is a two-player duel where each player plays as a Cardcaptor (Sakura, Madison, Li Showron) and captures Clow Cards by defeating them through Magic Wand attack combinations. The capture mechanic, where successful defeats remove Clow Card creatures from play and transfer them into the winning player's collection, mirrors the show's central premise.
The context
The Nelvana-produced Cardcaptors English dub aired on Kids' WB from 2000-2001 with substantial content edits from the original Cardcaptor Sakura. The TCG launched at the tail end of that broadcast run and targeted the girl-audience that had watched the English dub. Card art was sourced from the official Japanese artwork with English localisation.
The collector angle
Only a small number of booster waves shipped before NetStorm Media's CCG line ended. Foil Clow Card rares (The Windy, The Fiery, The Watery, The Sword, The Shield) are the iconic pulls because they replicate the show's signature card artwork. Japanese Cardcaptor Sakura CCG cards from Bandai's Japanese release are a separate and more extensive pool that is cross-collected by serious Cardcaptor Sakura fans.
