City of Heroes CCG translates NCsoft's massively multiplayer superhero MMO into a card game during the period when City of Heroes and City of Villains were the biggest superhero MMOs running, a year before Champions Online launched as a competitor.

The game

Released in 2005 by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG), City of Heroes CCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a Hero or Villain from the MMO's character archetypes (Tanker, Scrapper, Blaster, Controller, Defender for heroes; Brute, Dominator, Corruptor, Mastermind, Stalker for villains) and fights across Zone cards drawn from the game map (Atlas Park, Kings Row, Steel Canyon, etc.). Mechanics emphasise power-set combinations that mirror the MMO's slotting system.

The context

AEG had been running successful tie-in CCGs through the early 2000s and positioned City of Heroes as a crossover product for the MMO's active player base. The MMO was at its cultural peak when the CCG shipped, with regular marquee updates and a developer conversation on official forums that was unusually active for the time. Cryptic Studios provided direct setting consultation.

The collector angle

The base set and the City of Villains expansion are the main print runs. NCsoft shut down the City of Heroes MMO in 2012 (which became one of the most-mourned MMO closures in history), and the CCG has taken on an archival significance as preserved game lore beyond what remains playable. Signature character rares (Statesman, Lord Recluse, Positron, Manticore, Sister Psyche) are the trophy pulls, and a small run of promos given at 2005-2006 NCsoft community events exists in limited numbers.
