Conan CCG is Comic Images' 2006 trading card game based on Robert E. Howard's Conan of Cimmeria, tied specifically to Dark Horse Comics' Conan series that had been running since 2003. It was a short-lived release across two sets before Comic Images let the line lapse.
The game
Comic Images built the game around hero characters (Conan, Valeria, Belit, Red Sonja, Thoth-Amon) confronting enemies across the Hyborian Age. Combat was stat-driven with magic and special ability modifiers, and art direction pulled from Cary Nord and Thomas Yeates's Dark Horse Comics illustrations rather than Frank Frazetta's classic paperback covers. The card design leaned into the grim-fantasy aesthetic that Howard's original stories established.
The context
2006 was a Conan revival moment. Dark Horse's comic series was critically well-received, a new Conan film was in Hollywood development (eventually released in 2011 with Jason Momoa), and the broader sword-and-sorcery genre was getting attention from fantasy readers tired of post-Jordan epic-fantasy doorstops. Comic Images positioned the CCG at that cultural intersection, though it never achieved the scale needed for long-term publication.
The collector angle
The 2006 base set is the primary collector artifact of this CCG's brief run. Specific rare character cards (Conan Unchained, Belit of the Black Coast, Thoth-Amon) carry collector premiums for Conan-specific merchandise hunters. For Howard-fiction completionists who track every Conan licensed product, this CCG is a small but distinct entry in the franchise's merchandising history.
