Doctor Who Battles in Time is Panini's TCG-plus-magazine hybrid, a British format where collectible cards were bundled with a weekly Doctor Who magazine publication sold at newsagents across the UK.
The game
Released from 2006 onwards by Panini UK, Doctor Who Battles in Time is a two-player duel where each player builds a team of characters (Doctors, companions, allies) and enemies (Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Weeping Angels) and plays attribute-based matchups resolved by Story and Fighting values. The format was designed for mass-market kid distribution rather than hobby-store play.
The context
The Russell T. Davies Doctor Who revival had launched in 2005 and became the tentpole property of British family television. Panini produced the TCG weekly through its Doctor Who Adventures magazine, which meant new cards arrived in nearly every issue for years. Distribution was through UK supermarket and newsagent chains.
The collector angle
Multiple themed waves (Annihilator, Invader, Exterminator, Devastator, Tenth Doctor, Rebel, and various limited-edition sets) ran from 2006 onward. The 10th Doctor (David Tennant) and 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) foil portrait cards are the iconic chase pulls. Because the magazine distribution continued for years, the total card pool is enormous and genuinely hard to catalogue completely. Limited-edition uncut sheet promos from Doctor Who Magazine specials are the trophy items.
