Doomtown is Alderac Entertainment Group's 1998 weird-west CCG set in the Deadlands universe from Pinnacle Entertainment. The original AEG run spanned 1998 to 2001 before the game went dormant, then returned via Pine Box Entertainment's Doomtown: Reloaded reboot in 2014, which has continued in various publisher hands through the 2020s.

The game

Doomtown's signature mechanic was the Lowball poker subsystem: combat resolution drew poker hands from the shared deck, making every showdown a card-driven gunfight that rewarded both deck construction and live-play reading. Players commanded outfits (the Law Dogs, the Sloane Gang, the Whateleys, Sweetrock Mining, etc) competing for control of Gomorrah, the Deadlands setting's haunted frontier town.

The context

1998 was late-peak CCG era, and AEG was already running Legend of the Five Rings with significant success. Doomtown was their second big swing, built on Pinnacle's popular Deadlands RPG (which had launched in 1996 to great critical reception). The weird-west genre combination of Wild West tropes with horror, undead, and mad science gave the game a distinct identity that horror-fiction fans and western fans both appreciated.

The reloaded era

Pine Box Entertainment launched Doomtown: Reloaded in 2014 as a completely redesigned fixed-expansion game (closer to an LCG model than a traditional booster CCG). It carried through the mid-2010s before settling into various publisher arrangements. The 1998 AEG original and the 2014 Reloaded version are tracked as related but distinct collecting targets.

The collector angle

The AEG Classic run (1998 to 2001) is the retro window. Episodes One through Four and the Original Doomtown expansions are the collector touchstones, with specific Legendary and Unique cards carrying premiums for condition. Combined with Deadlands RPG collectibles, Doomtown Classic forms part of a broader weird-west gaming archive that collectors of the genre hunt as a unified body of work.
