Dragon Quest TCG adapts Square Enix's perennially popular Dragon Quest JRPG franchise, one of the foundational Japanese RPG series (predating Final Fantasy by a year) with enormous cultural weight in Japan.
The game
Released in 2007 by Square Enix (Japanese-market first), Dragon Quest TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a party of Dragon Quest heroes and monsters from across the numbered mainline games plus Monsters spinoffs. Classic DQ monster designs by Akira Toriyama (Slime, Dracky, Golem, Metal Slime, Liquid Metal Slime, Dragonlord) give the card pool instant visual recognition for the franchise's fans.
The context
Dragon Quest VIII had revitalised the franchise in the mid-2000s and Dragon Quest IX arrived in 2009, which put the TCG in a strong Japanese-market window. Akira Toriyama's iconic monster designs are the primary art draw. English distribution was essentially nonexistent despite Dragon Quest VIII's successful US launch.
The collector angle
Japanese-language prints are the primary card pool with multiple expansions. The Akira Toriyama-illustrated Metal Slime and Liquid Metal Slime rare cards are the iconic pulls, and Dragonlord boss-rare cards from the original Dragon Quest are nostalgic trophies. Because Toriyama's artwork spans both Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest, the TCG is sometimes cross-collected by Dragon Ball fans specifically for the Toriyama illustrations.
