El Mundo de Águila Roja CCG adapts the Spanish television series Águila Roja (Red Eagle), a prime-time historical drama that ran on RTVE from 2009-2016 and was a ratings phenomenon across Spain and Spanish-speaking markets.
The game
Released in 2011 by Zacatrus! in Spain, El Mundo de Águila Roja CCG is a two-player historical-intrigue duel set in 17th-century Spain, where each player controls a faction (Royalty, Commoners, Masonic Lodge, Catholic Church) and contests political and physical conflicts across Madrid and imperial-era Spain location cards.
The context
Águila Roja was one of the highest-rated Spanish dramas of its era, with consistent top-ten ratings during its seven-season run. The CCG was produced during the show's peak-season run with direct RTVE approval. Card photography used promotional stills of the show's cast, particularly David Janer as the masked hero Gonzalo de Montalvo.
The collector angle
The CCG is primarily a Spanish-language product with essentially no English distribution. Foil character cards of Gonzalo, Margarita and Satur are the iconic pulls for fans of the show. Because Águila Roja ended in 2016 and has not been reprinted or rebooted, the CCG has the specific archival significance of being the only interactive media product for one of Spain's biggest TV properties of the 2010s.
