Epic TCG (Epic Card Game) is White Wizard Games' spiritual successor to the Star Realms format, a lean-design TCG that prioritises fast gameplay and affordable complete-set buying over random-booster collecting.
The game
Released in 2015 by White Wizard Games, Epic TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a 30-card deck drawn from a 120-card base set. Mechanics use a straightforward Gold resource, a flexible deckbuilding scope that deliberately avoids the random-booster economy, and fast turn resolution. Expansion packs are sold as fixed sets rather than random boosters.
The context
White Wizard Games is Rob Dougherty and Darwin Kastle's studio, both former Magic the Gathering Pro Tour competitors. After their success with Star Realms, they designed Epic as a competitive TCG that addresses long-standing player complaints about collectible-game economics. The fixed-set model has been a recurring but minor current in TCG design for decades.
The collector angle
The base set plus Tyrants, Uprising, and Pantheon expansions make up the main catalog. Because the game uses fixed-set sales rather than random boosters, the 'chase card' dynamic is different from traditional TCGs, with specific promotional cards (Kickstarter exclusives, convention-only promos) being the primary aftermarket-value items. Signed Rob Dougherty and Darwin Kastle cards from design-team convention appearances are the niche collector trophies.
