Firestorm TCG is Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear universe adapted into a card game, bringing the 1994 Canadian mecha-RPG and miniatures setting into the late-90s CCG market.
The game
Released in 1998 by Dream Pod 9, Firestorm TCG is a two-player mech-combat duel where each player fields a Gear squad from the Heavy Gear factions (Northern, Southern, CEF, Caprician) and fights across Sector cards drawn from the Terra Nova setting. The Initiative-and-Maneuver system mirrors the Heavy Gear tabletop miniatures game's tactical feel.
The context
Dream Pod 9's Heavy Gear had an established miniatures-wargame and RPG player base since 1994 when the CCG launched. The company positioned Firestorm as a companion product rather than a standalone franchise, intended to bring new players into the miniatures line. The 1999 Heavy Gear animated series on YTV/Teletoon in Canada was airing concurrently.
The collector angle
Only a base set and a small Storm's End expansion shipped before Dream Pod 9 refocused on the miniatures line. Print runs were modest and Canadian-first distribution means US collectors often must source through Canadian hobby channels. The foil Hunter Gear, Jager and Grizzly rare cards are the signature pulls for Heavy Gear fans. The CCG is sometimes purchased specifically by Heavy Gear miniatures players looking to round out their Dream Pod 9 archive rather than as a standalone CCG.
