Future Card Buddyfight

Future Card Buddyfight is Bushiroad's 2014 Japanese-originated TCG, developed to compete with Yu-Gi-Oh! and Vanguard in the shonen-anime CCG space. It ran in English distribution from 2014 through 2020 before Bushiroad discontinued the English-language release while continuing the Japanese game.

The game

Designed by Bushiroad's internal team (the same studio behind Weiss Schwarz and Cardfight!! Vanguard), Buddyfight built its identity around the Buddy Monster relationship between player and a signature creature card. Each deck was built around one of several worlds (Dragon World, Magic World, Hero World, Darkness Dragon World, Legend World), and combat used Bushiroad's signature linked-attack resolution that Vanguard players would recognize.

The context

2014 was Bushiroad's peak multi-CCG expansion era. Vanguard was running strong, Weiss Schwarz was established as the anime crossover CCG, and Buddyfight was positioned as a younger-audience entry to catch children who might otherwise go to Yu-Gi-Oh!. The accompanying anime ran on Japanese TV concurrent with the card releases, and the English-language localization came through a Bushiroad USA distribution partnership.

The English discontinuation

Bushiroad ended English-language Buddyfight in 2020, citing the pandemic-era distribution challenges and commercial performance. The Japanese version continues. This split makes English Buddyfight cards a closed collectible: a six-year English run with a known start and end, no possibility of new English-language printings.

The collector angle

The 2014 to 2016 early-era English sets are the primary collector window. Specific Buddy Monster cards for popular protagonists (Drum Bunker Dragon, Jackknife Dragon, Abygale) command collector interest.
