.hack//G.U. TCG is the card-game tie-in to the Bandai Namco video-game series .hack, specifically the G.U. trilogy of 2006-2007 PlayStation 2 games that followed the original .hack quadrilogy.

The game

Released in 2007 by Bandai, .hack//G.U. TCG is a two-player duel set in the fictional MMO called The World where players build characters and avatars and battle against Data Drain, PKs and AI bosses. The Data Drain mechanic lets powerful cards drain opposing unit stats over sequential turns, reflecting the video games' signature corruption mechanic.

The context

The .hack franchise was a multi-media project from CyberConnect2 that spanned video games, anime (.hack//SIGN, .hack//Legend of the Twilight, .hack//Roots), novels and manga. The G.U. trilogy was the second major video game arc, and the TCG was aligned with that release window. Distribution was primarily Japanese.

The collector angle

Only a small number of waves shipped, primarily in Japanese. Haseo and Kite character rares are the iconic pulls for .hack fans. Because the .hack franchise is primarily remembered through its video games rather than the TCG, cards are collected as part of broader .hack memorabilia archives rather than for CCG play specifically. English-language .hack//G.U. TCG distribution was essentially nonexistent.
