Kaijudo TCG is the Wizards of the Coast rebranding of the Duel Masters franchise, an attempt to relaunch the long-running Japanese TCG into the US market with a new anime, new mechanics, and fresh branding.
The game
Released in 2012 by Wizards of the Coast under license from Takara Tomy, Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters is a two-player duel where each player summons Creatures from one of five Civilizations (Light, Water, Darkness, Fire, Nature) and uses Shields as a combined life-and-resource system. Taking damage breaks Shields, which are revealed and can sometimes be played for free. The design heritage from Duel Masters is direct and visible.
The context
Duel Masters was enormous in Japan (tens of millions of card sales annually) but had struggled in the US after its 2004-2006 WotC run. Kaijudo was the relaunch attempt, with a new Hub Network animated series and a fresh card pool. Wizards tried to build a tournament organising program around it.
The collector angle
Rise of the Duel Masters, Evo Fury, Gauntlet of the Gods, Invasion Earth, Clash of the Duel Masters, and Dragonstrike Infernus are the main expansions. WotC discontinued Kaijudo in 2014 after it failed to achieve Yu-Gi-Oh-level traction. Foil Legendary-rarity creatures and the VR (Very Rare) slot cards from each expansion are the chase pulls. The original Duel Masters card pool and Kaijudo are technically not cross-compatible but share creature names, which creates collector interest among fans of both lines.
Rarity breakdown
