Kingdom Hearts TCG adapts the Square Enix/Disney crossover RPG during the Kingdom Hearts II / 358/2 Days era, when Sora, Riku, Kairi and the Organization XIII Nobodies were at the height of their cross-fandom popularity.
The game
Released in 2007 by Tomy in Japan and localised into English in 2008, Kingdom Hearts TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a party led by Sora, Riku, Kairi or an Organization XIII member, supported by Disney and Final Fantasy ally cards (Donald, Goofy, Cloud, Sephiroth, Auron). World cards stand in for the franchise's signature Disney worlds (Traverse Town, Wonderland, Halloween Town, Agrabah, Port Royal), and Heart Points function as the shared life resource.
The context
Kingdom Hearts had become one of Square Enix's tentpole franchises by 2007, with three mainline entries plus handheld spinoffs. The TCG was positioned as a gateway product for younger fans and was designed with the series' signature Disney-Final Fantasy contrast in full visual force. Tomy's Japanese card treatment was famously high-production, with holofoil variants that stand out even among elite-tier TCG printings.
The collector angle
Base Set, Break of Dawn, and Destiny's Play are the main English expansions under Fantasy Flight distribution; the Japanese Tomy prints are a separate and more extensive catalog. Signature foils of Sora, Riku, Kairi and each Organization XIII member (Xemnas, Xigbar, Xaldin, Vexen, Lexaeus, Zexion, Saix, Axel, Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia, Larxene, Roxas) are the chase pulls. Japanese-exclusive Character Premium cards featuring fully illustrated scenes are among the most expensive pulls in any Kingdom Hearts merchandise category.
