Kult is a gnostic-horror CCG adaptation of the Swedish tabletop RPG where reality is a prison constructed by a fallen demiurge, humanity has been lobotomised into forgetting its divine nature, and waking up means confronting monsters most games would never put on a card face.
The game
Published in 1998 by Target Games and Heartbreaker Hobbies and Games, Kult CCG is a two-player duel where you build a Protagonist who is slowly awakening to the true reality, then fight madness, Archons, Death Angels, and other Protagonists across a Scene-card play area. Sanity loss is a core resource and losing yours loses the game.
The context
The Kult RPG had been shocking European tables since 1991 with content ordinary tie-ins never touched (body horror, blasphemy, abuse by heavenly powers), and the CCG adapted the tone honestly rather than sanding it off. It arrived in the same Target Games catalogue as Doomtrooper and Chronopia, during the bankruptcy-era wind-down that ended the company's CCG output.
The context
Because Target Games folded the year after the base-set release, Kult CCG never got the expansion treatment it had been designed for. Two small expansion waves (Metropolis and the unreleased third wave) are the main English printings. The German edition from Welt der Spiele is notably different in card layout and is cheaper to source in European lots.
The collector angle
The uncut sheet promos that circulated through Swedish game stores before the international release are among the rarest items in any CCG segment, and the original painted-panel card art by Nils Gulliksson has led to museum-gallery reprints untethered from the game. Sealed boxes of the Metropolis expansion are genuinely scarce because most of the print run was cut up and distributed loose through European mail-order catalogues to clear inventory during the Target collapse.
