Legend of the Burning Sands is Alderac Entertainment's Arabian-fantasy CCG, set in the desert lands south of Rokugan and intended as both a standalone game and a setting-expansion companion to Legend of the Five Rings.
The game
Released in 1998 by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) and designed by John Wick, Burning Sands is a two-player duel built around controlling Sources in a desert landscape, mustering viziers and djinni, and racing toward one of several victory conditions (Enlightenment, Conquest, Alliance). It shares its honor-and-dishonor language with L5R but uses distinct mechanics so the two games can optionally cross over.
The context
AEG was at the height of its L5R boom, and Burning Sands was positioned as an experiment: could they sustain a sibling game in the same metaplot space. The Arabian setting was distinctive at a time when most CCGs were European-fantasy or sci-fi, and John Wick's worldbuilding leaned into authentic desert-culture flavour rather than Orientalist pastiche.
The collector angle
The base set, Black Hand, and Shifting Sands are the main expansions. The line was wound down after 2000 when AEG focused resources on L5R and the upcoming Deadlands Dime Novels. Burning Sands Promo scrolls (oversized cards in the shape of a scroll) were given at AEG tournaments and are the visible trophy pulls. Crossover cards that bridge the L5R and Burning Sands setlists appear in both games' tournament pools and often command a premium among players who run unified decks.
