Lightseekers TCG

Lightseekers TCG is PlayFusion's original-IP hybrid physical-and-digital TCG, an ambitious late-2010s attempt to bridge action-figure toys, a mobile app, and a traditional card game into one product ecosystem.

The game

Released in 2017 by PlayFusion, Lightseekers TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a deck around one of six Orders (Storm, Tech, Nature, Astral, Mountain, Dread) and supports their hero with action-figure toys whose NFC chips unlock corresponding digital content. The card game is fully playable without the figures, but the digital-companion app adds narrative campaign content.

The context

PlayFusion was founded by former Skylanders and Disney Infinity designers, and Lightseekers was their bet on the next wave of toys-to-life products. The TCG launched after the action figures had established the universe. It picked up positive tournament-organising traction in the UK and US hobby scenes during 2018-2019.

The collector angle

Awakening, Mythical, Wave 3 and Wave 4 are the main expansion releases. PlayFusion wound down Lightseekers operations around 2020 as the toys-to-life market collapsed. Foil hero cards for each Order are the chase pulls. Sealed product is becoming increasingly scarce as liquidation inventory moves through collector channels, and the community that maintains active play today is small but dedicated.
