MapleStory iTCG adapts the wildly popular Nexon free-to-play MMORPG into a physical TCG with online-connection features, during the 2010-2012 window when MapleStory had tens of millions of registered accounts across Asia and North America.
The game
Released in 2010 by Wizards of the Coast under Nexon license, MapleStory iTCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a party of Maplers drawn from the MMO's class archetypes (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief, Pirate) and fights across Location cards drawn from MapleStory's regions. The iTCG designation reflects online-integration features: every card came with a redemption code that unlocked in-game MapleStory content.
The context
WotC had experimented with MMO-linked card games before (Star Wars Galaxies TCG, Duel Masters) and MapleStory iTCG was a serious attempt to pair physical cards with digital rewards. Nexon's immense MapleStory install base in Korea, Japan and the US gave the product an unusual potential audience.
The collector angle
Base, Call of the Black Mage, and a handful of theme-deck waves shipped. WotC discontinued the line in 2012. Cards with unredeemed MMO codes are worth noticeably more than redeemed copies because the digital items are still usable in current MapleStory servers, and unredeemed sealed product has become scarce. The Foil Zakum and Horntail boss-monster rares are iconic for MapleStory fans and sometimes collected independent of the TCG as pure MapleStory memorabilia.
