Marvel ReCharge CCG is the Marvel-branded CCG from the early-2000s window before Upper Deck's Vs System took over the Marvel and DC license combined, an experimental product that shipped just as Marvel was rebuilding its cinematic brand with the 2000 X-Men film.
The game
Released in 2001 by Marvel Enterprises (with Wizards of the Coast support), Marvel ReCharge CCG is a two-player superhero duel where each player builds a team around a Marvel icon (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk, Daredevil, Storm, Cyclops) and fights across a simple turn-tempo system designed to be learned in one game.
The context
Marvel had a turbulent late-1990s with its 1996 bankruptcy and 2001 emergence from restructuring. ReCharge CCG was part of the post-bankruptcy brand-rebuilding phase, aligned with the 2000 X-Men film and the upcoming Spider-Man 2002 film. It predates the Vs System (2004) by several years and has a simpler gameplay identity.
The collector angle
Two main waves shipped before the line ended as Marvel's CCG license was consolidated under the Vs System project. Foil cards of iconic characters (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk) from the case-break rare slots are the primary collector items. ReCharge cards are often bought specifically by Marvel-comics collectors cataloguing every Marvel-licensed CCG rather than by dedicated CCG players, which shifts the aftermarket dynamics toward character-recognition value rather than gameplay rarity.
