The game
Released in 2016 by Panini America, Meta X TCG is a two-player superhero duel where each player builds a team around a DC character (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Joker, Harley Quinn) and battles across shared Battlezones. The Meta Power mechanic scales with character popularity and film prominence.
The context
Panini had long been the dominant publisher of sticker-album collectibles internationally but had only dabbled in TCGs. Meta X was their serious bid to compete in the CCG format, backed by the DC film marketing spend of 2016. WB/DC gave Panini favorable licensing terms because the cinematic universe was still building momentum.
The collector angle
Batman v Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad themed expansions make up the main print run. Panini discontinued Meta X around 2018 as the DC film slate's commercial performance underwhelmed. Ultra-foil Batman and Joker cards with movie-still photography are the visible chase.
