Monster Rancher CCG adapts the Tecmo video-game franchise and its animated TV series, the late-90s kid-property that competed alongside Pokémon and Digimon for the creature-raising-and-battling market.

The game

Released in 1999 by Wizards of the Coast, Monster Rancher CCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a stable of monsters (Moochi, Tiger, Suezo, Golem, etc.) and battles them across Ranch cards. Mechanics use the video-game concept of a CD-generated monster, translated into cards by using the card's own print attributes as ranch inputs.

The context

Pokémon TCG had just exploded in 1998-1999 and every toy publisher was looking for the next creature-battler property. Monster Rancher, with its anime series airing on Fox Kids and its PlayStation games selling well, was the obvious second-tier candidate. WotC treated it as a quick-tie-in rather than a long-term franchise and printed conservatively.

The collector angle

Only the base Monster Rancher set shipped through WotC; a planned second wave was cancelled when Tecmo declined to extend the license. Foil rares of Moochi and the iconic Tiger of the Wind are the visible chase. Because the print run was small and the game sold modestly, sealed boxes are genuinely scarce today, and the line has a niche but consistent collector interest from Monster Rancher video-game fans rather than competitive CCG players.
