Monsuno TCG is the 2012-era TCG tie-in to the Nickelodeon animated series Monsuno: Combat Chaos, a Jakks Pacific/Nickelodeon original-IP creature-battler that attempted to compete in the post-Bakugan kid creature-battle market.
The game
Released in 2012 by Topps, Monsuno TCG is a two-player duel where each player throws virtual Monsuno cores (represented by physical core-shaped tokens in some starter-product variants) to summon creatures, then battles with Attack, Defense and Spin cards. The Core-launch mechanic combined physical toy spinning with card gameplay in the starter sets.
The context
Jakks Pacific had owned the Bakugan IP through Spin Master and was looking for its own creature-battler property to drive toys. Monsuno shipped with a coordinated Nickelodeon broadcast, action-figure toys, and TCG launch. The property had modest success and ran from 2012-2014.
The collector angle
Only a handful of waves shipped before the franchise wound down. Foil core-creature cards (Lock, Beyal, Quickforce, Backslash, Shurikane, Longfang) are the primary collector pulls. Because Monsuno was a Nickelodeon-era-specific property that has not resurfaced, the TCG serves as a time-capsule artifact for collectors of 2012-2014 Nickelodeon merchandise more than as an active TCG aftermarket.
