Mythos is Chaosium's 1996 Lovecraftian CCG, built on the company's decades-running Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. It ran from 1996 through 1997 across four expansions before Chaosium discontinued it, and the short run has made it a particularly hunted retro collector target.

The game

Designer Charlie Krank built Mythos around investigator characters and the creeping-horror narrative structure that defined Call of Cthulhu. Players drew Investigators, deployed them to Adventure locations, and battled Elder Gods, cultists, and mythos creatures across scenarios. Sanity mechanics reflected the Call of Cthulhu RPG directly, and the resolution rewarded survival and mystery-solving rather than head-on combat.

The context

1996 was the moment when every RPG publisher was trying to capture CCG revenue. Chaosium had been publishing Call of Cthulhu continuously since 1981, and the Lovecraftian horror audience had proven loyal across two decades. The Mythos CCG was their attempt to translate that proven IP into the CCG format alongside contemporaries like Vampire: The Eternal Struggle and Rage. The Mythos expansions (Dreamlands, New Aeon, Expeditions of Miskatonic U) each explored different corners of the Cthulhu Mythos, with distinctive card art in muted, atmospheric styles.

The end

Chaosium's financial troubles in the late 90s forced them to narrow focus back to Call of Cthulhu's core RPG line, and Mythos was discontinued in 1997 after the Expeditions set. The game has never been reprinted, and Chaosium has not returned to the CCG format for the Lovecraft IP, though Fantasy Flight's Call of Cthulhu LCG (2004 onward) occupies similar thematic territory.

The collector angle

The 1996 Mythos Limited and Standard sets, plus the four expansions, constitute the complete and final Mythos CCG catalog. Individual chase rares (particularly specific Great Old One cards and the rarer Investigators) trade at collector premiums, and sealed booster boxes from 1996 are getting scarce. For Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu collectors, Mythos is the distinct CCG-format chapter in an otherwise RPG-dominated franchise history.
