Overpower is Fleer's 1995 superhero CCG, one of the first major Marvel-licensed CCGs, and a cult classic among comics-card collectors. It ran for three years through Marvel, DC, and Image expansions before Fleer discontinued it in 1998.
The game
Designed to be fast and tactical, Overpower gave each hero a stat line (Energy, Fighting, Strength, Intellect) and let players build teams of four characters, chain attacks through Special and Mission cards, and resolve combat via battle-card stacks. It was specifically engineered to be easy to teach but deep enough to reward deckbuilding, and the actual comic-book art direction (real 90s Marvel house style) made every card a visual callback for readers of the era.
The context
Mid-90s was peak licensed-CCG experimentation. Fleer, the trading-card giant behind baseball and NBA cards, added CCGs to their portfolio and landed Marvel as their flagship property. The timing lined up with the X-Men animated series, Spider-Man's first solo cartoon, and a genuine Marvel-in-crisis period where the comics publisher was broadening out into everything card-shaped to stay solvent. Overpower was one of that era's bigger licensed CCGs before Marvel moved to VS System with Upper Deck in 2004.
The collector angle
Overpower Image Comics expansion from 1996 captured the late Image Comics peak and is a particularly hunted set for 90s comics collectors. The DC Mission Control expansion added Batman and Superman content. Chase Ultra-Rares (specifically the Classic set's holofoil characters) appreciate in grade, and sealed Fleer booster boxes from 1995 to 1996 are getting noticeably harder to source at reasonable prices.
The collector context
Overpower sits in the sweet spot of 90s comics nostalgia: the art is period-appropriate, the game was printed in real quantities but never reprinted, and the comics it catalogs (pre-2000 Marvel and DC) are themselves collectible. For retro TCG collectors who also follow comics, Overpower is a complete, closed, finished CCG from the Marvel-Fleer-90s axis.
