Pirates of the Caribbean TCG rides the sequel wave of the Gore Verbinski trilogy, specifically the window between Dead Man's Chest and At World's End when the franchise was at its peak commercial traction.
The game
Released in 2006 by Wizards of the Coast, Pirates of the Caribbean TCG is a two-player duel where each player commands a ship and crew (Black Pearl, Flying Dutchman, Interceptor, Empress) and fights naval battles across Port location cards. Mechanics combine ship-combat and boarding-action phases, reflecting the film series' signature set-pieces.
The context
WotC's Star Wars TCG had wound down in 2005 and the Pirates TCG was positioned as the next major cinematic-tie-in flagship for the division. Photography came from Disney production stills and the card pool covers the first film plus full Dead Man's Chest content. The game's complexity was pitched lower than Magic to reach a broader film-tie-in audience.
The collector angle
The base set and the Dead Man's Chest expansion are the main prints. Foil Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones and Elizabeth Swann character cards are the iconic pulls, and a limited-run Johnny Depp-signed Jack Sparrow promo exists but was never confirmed to have been distributed in meaningful quantities. Because WotC shut the line down before At World's End released in 2007, the planned third-film expansion exists only as playtest-card artefacts in former WotC staff collections.
