The game

Released in 2014 by Bandai, the Power Rangers Action Card Game is a two-player duel where each player builds a Ranger team and battles through a battlefield that splits into Mega Zord and personal combat zones. The Legendary Ranger mechanic lets players bring in any Ranger from the show's 20+ year history, reflecting Super Megaforce's anniversary-crossover premise.

The context

2014 was the 20th anniversary of Power Rangers in North America, and Saban Brands was running Super Megaforce on Nickelodeon with a heavy nostalgia pull for past-series Rangers. Bandai held the master Power Rangers license and produced the TCG alongside their figure line.

The collector angle

Multiple series of base sets and expansions were released covering Mighty Morphin through Dino Charge eras. Foil Legendary Ranger cards for each past-series Red Ranger are the defining chase pulls because they leverage the franchise's most emotionally resonant collector moment: every generation of Red Ranger on one card each.
