Sonic X TCG captures Sonic's 2003-2005 4Kids anime era, the period when Sega had partnered with studio TMS Entertainment to produce an anime version of Sonic that aired on Fox Box and 4Kids TV in the US.
The game
Released in 2004 by Score Entertainment, Sonic X TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a team around Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge, or Shadow and faces opposing villains (Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, Chaos). Mechanics use a Speed mechanic that lets Sonic-faction decks race through turns while other-speed characters trade off damage for utility.
The context
Sonic X was Sega's anime-era bet on Sonic, running alongside the Sonic Heroes and Sonic Rush video games and the ongoing Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog series. The TCG launched during the show's peak broadcast window and used direct art from the 4Kids-localised version of the anime.
The collector angle
Only a handful of waves shipped before the show concluded its US broadcast run. Holofoil Sonic, Shadow and Silver character rares are the iconic pulls. Because Sega has since stopped producing anime adaptations and Sonic X has become a minor chapter in Sonic franchise history, the TCG is a specific-era artefact that appeals to Sonic-merchandise completionists rather than to active CCG players.
