Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is the interactive theme-park-integrated card game Disney built specifically for the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, where cards are used in conjunction with physical portals around the park.
The game
Released in 2012 by Disney for the Magic Kingdom theme park, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom uses RFID-enabled cards that guests scan at specific portal locations (hidden in buildings and attractions around the park) to fight Disney villains in a guided in-park narrative. Cards represent classic Disney heroes (Mickey, Merlin, Merida, Tinker Bell, Stitch) and their magical abilities.
The context
Disney launched Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom as an interactive queue-extending experience to engage guests during wait times and add value to park attendance. Cards were distributed freely to any guest entering the park. The experience ran from 2012 through 2021 before being retired.
The collector angle
Dozens of cards were distributed over the ten-year run of the experience, with some cards significantly rarer than others based on how briefly they were distributed before being retired. Because any guest could obtain standard-pack cards for free, the collector value focuses almost entirely on the rare and retired cards rather than commons. The 2013 holofoil and 2016 special-event cards are the most-sought items. Disney collectors completing Magic Kingdom memorabilia archives frequently seek the full 2012-2021 card run.
