Speed Racer CCG aligns with the 2008 Wachowski live-action film, the CGI-heavy reimagining that tried to translate Tatsuo Yoshida's 1967 anime into a Hollywood property and underperformed critically but hit merchandise hard.

The game

Released in 2008 by Upper Deck, Speed Racer CCG is a two-player racing duel where each player picks a driver (Speed, Racer X, Chim-Chim-supported Spritle, plus rival drivers) and races Mach 5 or equivalent cars through Track location cards. Mechanics use positioning, passing, and special-function cards (Auto Jacks, Cutter Wheels, Rotary Jacks) that mirror the Mach 5's famous gadgetry.

The context

Warner Bros.' film tie-in merchandise push around Speed Racer 2008 was substantial even though the film struggled at the box office. Upper Deck's CCG was aligned with that launch, with card art pulled from both the film's CGI renders and the classic anime's Tatsuo Yoshida design lineage.

The collector angle

Only a small base set effectively shipped as Upper Deck was winding down its TCG division in 2008-2009. The Mach 5 foil and Racer X foil are the iconic pulls. Because Speed Racer 2008 did not generate the expected cultural footprint, the CCG has a distinct closeout-era feel and sealed product remains available at low prices in nostalgia-liquidation channels years later.
