Star Wars CCG is the CCG that built Decipher. Released in December 1995 by the Norfolk, Virginia studio, it ran through 2001 before the license passed to Wizards of the Coast, producing fifteen expansions across the original trilogy, prequels, and expanded universe.
The game
Designer Tom Braunlich built the game around "Force" as a shared resource, with Light Side and Dark Side players competing over planet locations. The black-bordered premiere set from 1995 is one of the iconic first releases in CCG history, and the game's treatment of unique characters (Luke, Vader, Han) with detailed stats and persistent battlefield presence became the template for every narrative-IP CCG that followed.
The context
1995 was the year after Magic's explosion, when licensing studios were racing to get their franchises into booster packs. Decipher had Star Trek (1994), and adding Star Wars gave them the two biggest sci-fi IPs at a moment when the original trilogy was reissued on VHS and the Special Editions were a year away. The community called it the CCG for players who wanted narrative play over tournament abstraction.
The context for collectors
Premiere Limited (the black-border 1995 print run) is the chase. Unlimited (white-border reprint) came later and is more accessible. Jedi Pack, the Jabba's Palace expansion, Cloud City, and the Death Star II set all have distinct collector markets. Decipher's end-of-license period produced some of the deepest-cut cards in any CCG's history, with tiny print runs and specific promos that rarely surface today.
The collector angle
Star Wars CCG has a dedicated Player's Committee community that has kept tournament formats alive with virtual cards post-license. The original Decipher run is a finished product: sealed Premiere boxes appreciate, chase foils from late expansions are legitimately scarce, and the community's archival work keeps the knowledge base intact. For retro collectors, Star Wars CCG is a complete, finite, and meaningful arc from the studio that defined licensed CCGs.
