The game

Released in the 1990s, Super Nova CCG is a two-player space-combat duel where each player builds a fleet and fights across sectors that periodically undergo stellar events (supernovas, gravitational waves, neutron star collisions) that reshape the battlefield. The event-reshuffle mechanic is the distinctive design element.

The context

The 1995-1997 CCG launch wave produced multiple space-themed entries, and Super Nova's distinctive stellar-phenomenon mechanic was its attempt to differentiate from Star Trek CCG, Star Wars CCG, Wing Commander CCG and other better-known space-themed competitors.
