Tempest of the Gods is a Norse-mythology CCG set during the Ragnarok event, where the gods, giants and mortal heroes clash and the player takes the role of a deity-champion fighting to tip the outcome.

The game

Published by Wizards' Attic in 1997, Tempest of the Gods is a two-player duel where each player controls a Norse pantheon figure (Odin, Thor, Loki, Freyja, and several of the Jotnar) and fields supporting Warriors, Beasts, and Rune cards to fight across the Nine Worlds. Victory is measured by Ragnarok points, and the game actively escalates with each turn toward a final apocalyptic exchange.

The context

Wizards' Attic was one of the small-press CCG publishers active in the late-90s indie wave, and Tempest of the Gods was their flagship product. The Norse-myth theme was less crowded than generic fantasy in 1997, and the game leaned into historically accurate flavour text drawn from the Poetic and Prose Eddas.

The collector angle

Only the base set and a single Yggdrasil expansion shipped before Wizards' Attic wound down its CCG line in 1998. Print quantities were small and distribution was spotty outside the west-coast hobby-store circuit. The painted-rune foil cards (one per booster box) are the chase, and a limited run of Scandinavian-artist signed promos from a 1997 Reykjavik gaming convention exists in the Icelandic collector market.
