The Eye of Judgment is Sony's 2007 augmented-reality CCG for the PlayStation 3, one of the first commercial products to fuse physical cards with computer-vision scanning for game resolution. Sony Computer Entertainment partnered with Wizards of the Coast for the CCG design and card manufacturing.
The game
The defining hook was the PlayStation Eye camera mounted on a stand: it scanned physical cards placed on a game mat, recognized them, and instantiated 3D monster models on the television screen with full combat animations. Players built physical decks like any CCG, then played matches on the mat where the digital layer handled rules resolution, damage tracking, and visual presentation. The experience was halfway between tabletop CCG and video game.
The context
2007 was a specific moment in augmented-reality gaming, with Sony pushing the PlayStation Eye as an innovation platform. The Eye of Judgment's card recognition was technically impressive for its era and got substantial press coverage. The fantasy setting and the familiar CCG deckbuilding gave it an on-ramp for tabletop CCG players curious about the digital layer.
The end
Sony released the base set plus several expansions through 2009 before ending the product. The game required specific PS3 hardware (the PlayStation Eye plus the stand), which limited long-term playability once that hardware generation aged out. Sony has not resurrected the concept in subsequent PlayStation generations.
The collector angle
The 2007 Biolith Rebellion base set and the 2008 expansion sets are the collector catalog. Specific rare monster cards (particularly legendary-tier creatures) carry collector interest both as CCG items and as historical artifacts of early augmented-reality gaming. The requirement for specific PS3 hardware means the game is no longer casually playable, which ironically makes the physical cards more appealing as pure collectibles. For collectors tracking unusual phygital CCGs, Eye of Judgment is a foundational example alongside Chaotic and later WoW TCG Loot Cards.
