The Simpsons TCG captures the show at peak cultural penetration, around Season 14, when Simpsons references were an actual lingua franca for any television-literate adult.

The game

Released in 2003 by Wizards of the Coast, The Simpsons TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a Springfield-themed deck around a signature character (Homer, Bart, Mr. Burns, Bob, Krusty, Ned), fielding family members and citizens and interacting with Location cards from across the show (the nuclear plant, Moe's Tavern, Kwik-E-Mart, Evergreen Terrace). Humour is carried through the Gag cards, which pay off show-specific running jokes.

The context

WotC was aggressively licensing in 2003 (Star Wars, Duel Masters, D&D Miniatures, MLB Showdown revivals). The Simpsons TCG was pitched at the casual-adult market rather than the hardcore tournament audience, and the rules were designed to be learnable inside one episode of the show itself. Matt Groening's team approved most card art and lines, which gave it a flavour-text quality above the typical tie-in CCG.

The collector angle

The base Springfield set and the Wedding at the Church expansion were the main prints. A third expansion was in development but never published. Character-foil variants of Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie from the 2003 launch event are the visible chase. Autographed cards from voice actor appearances (Dan Castellaneta, Nancy Cartwright, Harry Shearer) at 2003-2004 San Diego Comic-Con exist in very small quantities.
