Thorgal Kolekcjonerska Gra Karciana is the Polish CCG adaptation of the long-running Belgian comic Thorgal, a Viking-exile-in-a-fantasy-world saga by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński that is a landmark in European comics.

The game

Published in 2001 by Wydawnictwo EGMONT in Poland, Thorgal CCG is a two-player adventure duel where each player takes on a role from the comic (Thorgal, Aaricia, Jolan, Kriss de Valnor) and plays through Quest cards drawn from the published albums. Combat uses an attribute-and-event system with a distinctive Ancestors mechanic reflecting the Viking-fate themes of the source material.

The context

The Polish-language CCG market in the early 2000s was a vibrant ecosystem of local-IP translations and domestic originals, and Thorgal was a natural fit because Rosiński is Polish and the Thorgal comics were runaway bestsellers in Eastern Europe. Card art was commissioned from Rosiński himself plus a supporting illustrator team, which makes it one of the very few CCGs where the original IP artist contributed directly.

The collector angle

The main set and two small expansion waves (Ragnarok and Kriss de Valnor) make up the full Polish print. The game was never released in English, so all cards are Polish-language and scarce outside Eastern Europe. Rosiński signed a limited run of promotional cards at Polish comic conventions between 2001 and 2003, and those are the chase pulls for both CCG collectors and Thorgal comic fans. Sealed boxes are hard to source because the Polish hobby retail chain was small and rapid turnover meant most stock was opened.
