Universal Fighting System (UFS) is the fighting-game CCG originally published by Sabertooth Games in 2006, later moving to Jasco Games, who continues to publish it through the 2010s and into the 2020s. It started with Street Fighter and has cycled through dozens of fighting-game licenses: Soulcalibur, King of Fighters, Darkstalkers, Mortal Kombat, and many more.
The game
Designed specifically to mimic the pacing and feel of 2D fighting games, UFS uses a stance-based combat system where players pick a fighter, assemble a deck of attacks and defenses, and trade blows over short matches. Individual attacks chain based on speed stats, mirroring combo structure from games like Street Fighter II. The licenses rotate through fighting-game eras, which keeps the game's visual identity in sync with whatever fighting-game franchise is active in the broader culture.
The context
UFS is notable as one of the few fighting-game-themed CCGs to sustain a continuous run across multiple publishers. Sabertooth originally launched it with Street Fighter in 2006, Jasco picked it up in the early 2010s and has maintained it since. The fighting-game community's loyalty to specific characters and franchises drove a constantly-refreshing collector base.
The context for collectors
The original 2006 Street Fighter sets from Sabertooth are the most collected, both for their status as the first UFS releases and because fighting-game nostalgia centers heavily on 2D-era Capcom. Soulcalibur III and King of Fighters XI sets have strong collector followings within their respective fighting-game fandoms. Specific rare character promo cards from tournament circuits command high prices in condition.
The collector angle
UFS is the CCG for fighting-game fans, and the tournament scene crosses over with fighting-game tournament attendance (EVO, CEO, Combo Breaker). For a retro CCG archive, the Sabertooth era (2006 to 2010) is the closed vintage window, while Jasco's ongoing Jasco era is modern. The Sabertooth Street Fighter and Soulcalibur sets are the foundational retro entries.
