Wars TCG is Decipher's post-Star-Wars original sci-fi universe, built after they lost the Star Wars license to Wizards of the Coast and needed a new flagship space-warfare CCG.

The game

Released in 2004 by Decipher, Wars TCG is a two-player space-combat duel set in a universe where humanity, the alien Shi, and the Gongen empire fight across Quadrant 37. It uses an arena system similar to Decipher's Lord of the Rings TCG (which was at its peak in 2004), with separate Fleet, Commander, and Homeworld zones. The mechanics emphasised fast turns and a rolling victory condition.

The context

Decipher was coming off the Lord of the Rings TCG's enormous success and trying to prove that their engine could launch a brand-new IP without relying on a licensed property. Art was commissioned from space-opera veterans and the universe's bible ran to hundreds of pages of lore, much of it never used on cards.

The collector angle

Warlord, Under Siege, and Incursion are the main expansions. Wars TCG did not survive beyond 2005, and the planned Empire Fights Back wave has never been published. Playtest cards from that cancelled expansion are the serious chase. Foil rares from the base set trade easily in the Decipher-collector community, particularly the Gongen Shogun and Shi Queen Mother foils. Because Wars TCG had a loyal but small player base, sealed booster boxes are relatively cheap to find but individual commons from specific sets can be surprisingly hard to track down due to regional distribution gaps.
