Webkinz TCG ties into Ganz's plush-toy-and-MMO property that was enormous with elementary-age kids through the late 2000s, extending the brand into a dedicated trading card game format.
The game
Released in 2008 by Ganz, Webkinz TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a team of Webkinz plush-animal characters and plays through Activity cards that mirror the MMO's mini-games. Each card includes a unique code that unlocks online content on the Webkinz website.
The context
Ganz's Webkinz plush toys (each including a website activation code) had become one of the most successful 2005-2010 kid-market products. The TCG was designed to extend that code-unlock ecosystem into collectible cards without requiring a new plush purchase for each code. Distribution was through mass retail, Hallmark stores and specialty toy shops.
The collector angle
Multiple waves of Webkinz TCG shipped through 2010-2012. Unredeemed codes retain value because Webkinz's online features still run. Foil Webkinz animal cards (particularly the rare holiday-edition and limited-edition cards) are the primary chase pulls. Because Webkinz has a large post-kid adult fan base that maintains accounts, the TCG cards continue to trade through dedicated Webkinz-collector channels independent of the general TCG market.
