Xena: Warrior Princess TCG rides the peak of the Renaissance Pictures cinematic universe, when Xena and Hercules were syndication tentpole shows and every licensing shop wanted a piece of the action.
The game
Released in 1998 by Wizards of the Coast, Xena TCG is a two-player narrative-combat game where each player pilots Xena, Gabrielle, or a rival (Callisto, Ares, Velasca) through a sequence of Adventure cards, resolving fights with Power and Strategy cards while triggering signature events from the show. The Chakram toss is a single-card play that rewires the battlefield in one turn.
The context
WotC were post-Magic-but-pre-Pokémon and trying to see how many TCGs the Magic engine could bootstrap. Xena, along with the companion Hercules TCG, was part of that experiment. Art is heavy on screen stills plus commissioned pin-up work, aimed at the show's fan base rather than the classic CCG audience. Publishing timing lined up with Xena's Season 4 peak.
The collector angle
The base set and the BloodLines expansion are the two main waves. Chase cards include hologram variants of Xena, Gabrielle and Callisto, plus a pair of foil Lucy Lawless photo cards that were pulled at roughly one-per-case rates. A planned tie-in expansion for Xena: The Musical Episode was playtested but never released, and surviving mockups exist in former WotC employee collections. The Hercules TCG shares a print format and cross-compatible mechanics with Xena, which means a surprising amount of secondary-market trading happens across both lines at once.
