Yu Yu Hakusho TCG adapts Yoshihiro Togashi's 1990s shonen classic during the Funimation English-dub era on Cartoon Network, when Yusuke Urameshi, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei were appointment viewing for the early-2000s anime audience.
The game
Released in 2004 by Score Entertainment, Yu Yu Hakusho TCG is a two-player duel where each player builds a team led by a signature character and plays Spirit Energy attacks, signature techniques (Spirit Gun, Rose Whip, Dragon of the Darkness Flame), and Location cards drawn from the Dark Tournament and Three Kings arcs. Mechanics use a Spirit Energy resource that accumulates through turns and is spent on higher-cost attacks.
The context
Score had Dragon Ball Z under license through the late 1990s and 2000s, and Yu Yu Hakusho was a natural companion product for the Funimation-licensed shonen roster. The TCG shipped as the Cartoon Network broadcast of YYH was running on Toonami, targeting the same teen-and-young-adult anime viewership.
The collector angle
Ghost Files, Dark Tournament, Exile, Ascension, and Betrayal are the main English expansions. Foil Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei and Toguro rare cards are the signature pulls. Score lost the license around 2006 and the game was never rebooted under a different publisher, making the original 2004-2006 Score prints the only commercial English Yu Yu Hakusho TCG product. The Younger Toguro and Sensui rare finalists-era cards are the most-requested trophy pulls.
