Zatch Bell: The Card Battle adapts Makoto Raiku's manga and the accompanying Viz Media anime dub that aired on Cartoon Network in 2005-2006, following child mamodo wizards and their human partners in a magical-tournament format.
The game
Released in 2005 by Bandai, Zatch Bell: The Card Battle is a two-player duel where each player pairs a Mamodo (Zatch, Kiyo, Tia, Megumi, Kolulu, Brago) with a Book Keeper and casts spells by combining Book and Mamodo cards. The Kanji-spell mechanic requires specific card combinations to trigger the show's signature spell attacks (Zaker, Raja Zaker, Bao Zakeruga).
The context
Zatch Bell (known as Konjiki no Gash Bell in Japan) had been a significant shonen property since 2001, and the English release aligned with the Cartoon Network broadcast on the Toonami block. Bandai held the master merchandising license and produced the TCG alongside figures and video games.
The collector angle
Only a couple of English waves shipped. Foil Zatch and Bao Zakeruga cards are the iconic pulls. The Japanese Zatch Bell card game (Gash Card Battle) is a substantially larger and earlier card pool, which international Zatch Bell fans often import rather than relying solely on the limited English distribution. Cards featuring Brago and Sherry are prized by fans of that rival-pair arc.
