Anime Madness is an English-language collectible card game self-published by a small independent label in October 1996, designed by Matthew Johnston alongside Erik Westig and Devin Higgins. The three creators conceived the game in 1993 while still in high school, intending to combine the then-exploding anime fandom with the CCG format popularized by Magic: The Gathering. After Erik Westig died in 1995, Johnston and Higgins completed the project in his memory. The game secured licenses through AnimEigo for anime properties including Bubblegum Crisis, Riding Bean, and Genesis Survivor Gaiarth, with card art extracted from laserdisc frames using the limited digital tools available at the time. Gameplay involved two or more players competing to become the dominant MegaCorp by driving opponents from 20 Ratings Points down to zero or raising one's own Ratings Points to 40. The game achieved modest regional success, earned recognition in Inquest Magazine, and was distributed through major hobby channels. Plans for a second set were shelved as the CCG market became saturated in 1997.
