Juushinden: Ultimate Beast Battlers is a card battle system developed and published by Konami in Japan, released on December 6, 2007, for the Nintendo DS. The game is notable for bridging physical trading cards and a handheld video game: players scan real cards into the DS using a Magic Reader peripheral that plugged into the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, with each card containing an RFID chip readable in under a second. Konami released multiple physical card sets to accompany the game, with the first set containing 60 cards at launch and all four sets becoming available several months later. The card game component therefore existed as both a physical CCG and as the primary input device for the video game. The format was innovative but had limited commercial impact, and no sequel or expanded card series followed. The physical cards are today primarily of interest to collectors of DS-era gaming curiosities.
