Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is Fantasy Flight's cooperative LCG, launched in 2011 and famously the title that converted the LCG format from competitive-duel into cooperative narrative play.
The game
Designed by Nate French, Lord of the Rings LCG is a one-to-four-player cooperative game where you build a fellowship of Heroes (Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Éowyn, Beravor, Spirit Glorfindel, and dozens more) and play through Quest scenarios that span the War of the Ring and ancillary Tolkien content. Each scenario is a stack of Encounter cards representing enemies, locations and treachery, and the thematic fidelity to Tolkien is unusually strict.
The context
This was the LCG that proved fixed-distribution cooperative card games could sustain a decade of release cadence. Launched in 2011, it ran continuously until 2020 with regular expansion cycles. FFG followed this formula with Arkham Horror LCG in 2016 and Marvel Champions in 2019. A revised "Revised Edition" relaunch arrived in 2022.
The collector angle
Core Set plus eight full cycles (Shadows of Mirkwood, Dwarrowdelf, Against the Shadow, Ringmaker, Angmar Awakened, Dream-chaser, Haradrim, Ered Mithrin) and deluxe expansions (Khazad-dûm, Heirs of Númenor, The Voice of Isengard, The Lost Realm, The Grey Havens, The Sands of Harad, The Wilds of Rhovanion, A Shadow in the East) are the first-edition print. Promo Heroes from GenCon, alternate-art Aragorn and Gandalf, and the sealed first-printing Core Sets are prestige collector items. The 2022 Revised Edition is a separate print run with reworked cards and is catalogued separately.
