Shinkukan is a kawaii steampunk trading card game designed by artist John Hathway and published by JH Lab in Japan, with an initial Japanese beta release in December 2013 and an international English-language crowdfunding campaign launched in 2014. The game is set in a fictional future, 273 years after the Akaishi Shutdown, in which corporations sponsor android competitors called Dolls in a grand tournament known as the Shinkukan Competition. Players take the role of Doll Manipulators and build decks to battle head-to-head in matches lasting roughly 30 minutes. The beta version was tested by approximately 3,000 Japanese players before JH Lab sought Kickstarter backing to fund the English edition. A broader media extension, Shinkukan Dolls, was released as a mobile game in April 2016 by developer Gulti. The game's English language version was packaged and ready as of 2015 but faced distribution challenges, and it is considered a niche release with a devoted collector following.
