Star Trek CCG Second Edition is Decipher's 2002 ground-up redesign of their Star Trek CCG, a completely separate game from the 1994 First Edition despite sharing the franchise and publisher. It ran from 2002 through 2007 when Decipher lost the Star Trek license, producing ten expansions across all five Trek TV series plus the Kelvin-era reboot film.

The game

Designers Rolf Fischer and Shawn Hall built Second Edition to address complaints about First Edition's complexity. The dilemma-pile mechanic was simplified, the personnel-mission structure was tightened, and the game was tuned for faster, tournament-friendly matches rather than the exploratory pacing of the original. Card layouts were cleaner, rules text more explicit, and the whole design felt like a Trek CCG built for the 2000s rather than a 1994 ruleset patched a dozen times.

The context

2002 was Decipher's last year before their portfolio started contracting. They still had Lord of the Rings TCG running strong, Young Jedi Collectible Game had recently wrapped, and Star Trek Second Edition was positioned as their next multi-year flagship. The game launched into a moment when Trek television was at a low ebb (Enterprise was mid-run and struggling), but Decipher's CCG community kept building.

The end

Decipher lost the Star Trek license in 2007 alongside their broader CCG retrenchment. Second Edition ran for five years and produced a mature, tournament-respected game before that contract ended. The Continuing Committee volunteer organization has maintained both First and Second Edition through the post-license era.

The collector angle

Second Edition is a complete five-year product arc with known set counts and defined endpoints. Premiere (2002) and the Necessary Evil expansion (2003) are the early-era collector targets, while the 2006 and 2007 late-era expansions (To Boldly Go, Strange New Worlds) are the end-of-license rarities. For Trek CCG collectors, First Edition and Second Edition are tracked as separate complete catalogs, and serious collectors hunt both eras as distinct achievement sets.
